Sorry another newbe question. My TD5 has an oil leak, I would say it is dropping around half and egg cup of engine oil after each run. I thought I had tracked it down to the back of the cam cover, especially given the amount of oil of the sound proof cover, but no. I cleaned the back of the cover and head and went for a run and no leak from there.
It appears to becoming from the rear of the Engine on the passenger side, but I just cant track it down. Its not the oil filter or the front came cover, either. See photos. Any advice please team.

Hi,
There is two common fails for leaking on the rear right side of engine. The most common leak is that the fuel pressure regulator leaks (diesel) you can see it if the engine runs checking in that area with o torch. But if you are sure that it’s engine oil leaking thats not it. But in nine cases of ten this is the problem. see pic 1
The other common fail is the gasket between the cylinder head and the cover. In rear end there is a halfmoon-shape on the gasket, this is little tricky to get fit when you reassamble the cover. see pic 2

I dont think it is diesel, I am losing engine oil, appox 1lt every 2k. I will change out the came cover gasket, just waiting for the injector loom. Its also leaking oil into the ECU, which I have to admit upsets my Mrs less than the oil on the drive… May be one alternative is to hang a drip tray from the bottom on the chassis : )

I was getting air into the fuel system a few weeks back, may be I should check to torque on the regulator. But to be honest it does not smell of fuel and looks very much like engine oil which I am losing an a regular basis. Merry Christmas

Happy New Year. I have been a bit busy with changing the fuel pump, so the oil leak took a lower priority. But now I have ordered some florescent marker oil and a UV torch.
My plan is to remove the belly plate and get it up on a lift and have a proper look-see.All the Best Michael

You were completely correct, it is the regulator. I did not notice it before, but I just changed the fuel pump and the improved pressure is causing a very noticeable drip, drip.

So the fuel leak was a damaged O ring on the pressure regulator. What a fun job getting the regulator off .. : )

Thought I would just give feedback, so I changed the sump gasket, cam cover gasket, refurbished the fuel regulator and oil was still pissing out. Change the crank seal yesterday, the ribs were warn flat. Not leak now. I am a happy man : ) But not a job. I want to repeat any time soon…
Just to close this story, in the end the oil leak turned out to be a warn crank seal. Had to get help for this one from Ground Zero 4 x4 as way above my skill set. Was very happy with them by the way. Fitted single mass fly wheel and clutch from LOFClutches at same time so happy now.

men just nu är det kompisens D1a som jag renoverar motorn på…
och innan det var det en annan kompis Freelander2a som fick nya glödstift och startmotor…
