Hi Michael,
snorkel fitted and yes that might be one obstacle to get the correct flow through the engine.
So you decided for a cartridge change, when you say upgraded what does that mean?
Have not yet ordered anything but leaning towards the replacement unit at approx. 3300:- (see link above)

Hi Henrik,

I brought this https://www.turborebuild.co.uk/webshop/prod_5700273-Uprated-Hybrid-Billet-Turbo-CHRA-Core-452239-Land-Rover-Defender-Discovery-TD5-Turbocharger-Cartridge.html Apparently it has less lag. I am just waiting for a new oil pipe and drain, if customs dont send it back. Been have big issues with postage.

The hatch in the snorkel really makes a difference. If you want to test it before doing anything drastic like I did and cutting holes, remove the rubber intake hose from the air filter box. See if you notice a difference on the pick up. I could not see the link you mentioned.

All the Best Micaehl

I also believe the leakage isn´t directly from the turbo but it still got some movements and then…..if above works the cost is reasonable.

Finally starting my Turbo project, I found an old one online so am refurbishing so I can keep using my 90. Added an uprated cartridge from Turbo Rebuild UK, see link below. Its lighter than the original so should spin up quicker. Also added stainless oil feed and return pipes from Pioneer 4×4, as well as a waste gate actuator from Pioneer. So lets see how much difference it makes, at least its been fun putting it all together. P.S. Yellow paint makes it go much faster…

Hi Michael, looks good please let us know the final result and any struggles on the way.
Like the oil feed/drain set looks great, think I need to order that as well.
I still haven´t started my change, as normal life tend to interferer with Defender garage time…..

Hi Henrik,

I will do. Much less stress having a spare turbo to refurbish, then I will just swap it out. Well may be just swap it out, you never know with Land Rover….

Hi Henrik,

I am getting closer to fitting the turbo, decided to go the full hog so have ordered an Ali sport intercooler, I think the biggest challenge will be to get the winch and bumper off…

Did you sort your issues out, I was actually thinking, when I change mine out I will have a spare turbo. If your interested I could fit a new cartridge, if you would like to buy it, for cost : )

Hilsen Michael

Hi Michael,
thanks for thinking of me! But I actually have a ”new” renovated complete turbo plus the feed pipe, discharge pipes that you advised on laying on my bench waiting for me to gather courage…… and to get some spare time to install it. Sooner or later it might happen! 🙂
Related to the exchange turbo it looks good and came within a few days, pay by Klarna etc less 3000:- incl all. (see link above)
I´ll keep you all posted!

Thats great news, my turbo is still on the bench. Did a long trip up North last week, came back and steering fluid leaking, then had to change rear prop shaft. I am starting to feel my Landy is avoiding the new turbo.

Let me know how yours go, I will do the same. All the Best Michael

Hi Henrik,

So I finally got round to starting the turbo, it was not my plan, but I had to change the steering pump, then found the water pump was clogged up, which meant removing the centrifugal filter housing and by that stage I thought sod it, in for a penny in for a pound.

As it turned out the water pump was well clogged, the steering pump was leaking and the hydraulic pipes were almost rusted through. Its been a long week… Will give an update when its all done.

All the Best Michael

You keep yourself busy!
I try to avoid touching anything that ain´t broken…..and hope for the best!
But I still have the full Turbo exchange kit laying and waiting for me, I guess a rainy vacation day will be the best option.
Next challenge is to figure out how to change the outer right wing (outer skin, not the full wing) without dismantling too much.
Bought a new skin, still not painted but I guess that is for after the vacation, could be nice to drive a little as well and not spend the time in the garage.
You´re not heading south this year?

Hi Henrik,

I am running against the clock, the UN will want me back at work soon, as Covid ends, so I have to get my 90 tip top before I go. In addition I have had some really bad experiences with local garages and I would rather do it myself. Normally I do one job and take a break, but I have been flat out for 2 weeks now. Started with front and rear arms and bushes, as she pulls after bumps. Spent the last 2 days fitting the PAS and new pipes what a bloody pain (Brit parts)…

Cheers Michael

Slowly getting there… Was very impressed with my Mrs, no issue with parts in dish washer, she is a keeper : )

Hi Michael,
Haven´t read all the posts, just curoius – do you still run the EGR?
I´ve blanked mine off with a thin ”solid” spacer I made out of Aluminum (cut to fit in between one of the joints on the piping.
Left the pipe to fool the ”besiktning” – don´t really know if the girls and guys at the Besiktning cares if the EGR still in place and works.
Probably find out when it´s time later this fall.
Looking good (with some paintjob) under the hood 🙂 !
