Hello SLRK from England,
Please may I get some local knowledge and advice on visiting the North of Sweden next year?
My name is Dan and I drive a Defender 110 converted into a camper van. Hopefully my girlfriend and I will be visiting Sarek next year to go hiking and camping but we intend on driving up. We’d like to drive to up past Jokkmokk and up to the edge of the park and depending on how far the roads go, park up and spend 5 or so days on foot in the park.
We would like to visit in April or May as we think this will be the best balance between the snow melting and not too many Mosquitoes! Hopefully we will take a few days to drive up via Holland, spend enough time in the National Park and then take a bit longer going back stopping off in Göteborg for a few days.
I know the Park is very remote but is it safe, and legal to park the car for a few days whilst we’re camping? Any other pointers would be very much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Dan & Katie

Normally april is a winter month there and there will still be a lot of snow melting and a lot of water in may and into june. Dirt roads may also be muddy and in general bad state well into june.
I would suggest you plan a visit in late june, early july instead to visit our swedish fjäll in their prime. Mosquitoes are not to bad that early in the summer but that is a matter of opinion. I go flyfishing at different locations along the northern Norwegian borders every summer and usually choose the last week of july.
The weather can be very unforgiving to those who don’t have the right equipment. You should be prepared for 0°C at night, heavy rainfall and hard wind. Mobile phones are also useless in the area.
I don’t want to scare you away but proper equipment and knowlege makes the difference between an amazing travel experience and a nightmare.2010-12-06 kl. 08:50 #6402[Originally posted by DanWhite]
Thank you Lup (Wolf?),
The weather really is the main factor so we will look at dates very carefully so June or July looks likely now. We’ve heard lots of reports about it being very unforgiving up there, that makes it part of the challenge! Thankfully we are both in the Royal Navy and my girlfriend is a qualified mountain leader so we have some experience in the outdoors in tough conditions.
Also we know you cant drive into the parks and we don’t intend on driving anywhere damaging to the environment. Does anyone know how far the roads go into the area. I have ordered some maps (BD10) which will arrive soon and google maps only goes so far!
Cheers

Sounds like you will be well prepared.
Here you can find good maps while waiting for your BD10 http://gis.lst.se/lanskartor/ select "Norbottens län"

Hi.
I did some hiking when I was younger with my friends from the Marines…And I agree with the above, in april when I were in SAREK we used skies. Mid to late june is smarter, before the small nasty bugs awake.
Even if you are qualified ( as you certainly seem to be ) it takes a lot of time to get into the park, the distance is longer than you might think
and it might be very wet still. Follow high ground paths…Do not plan to cross any large creeks – on the map – at this time as it might be very difficult. As a matter of fact the national park of SAREK do not begin near the road, depending on where you park
but you pass another park on your way in – just as beautiful. Please consider spending more than a week on this adventure. Some people I meet there have the strategy to try to sneak up on animal life ( I think they want to see bears… ) but I and my friends have the opposite strategy. We bring an empty bottle of steel to fill with some small stones or rather a device that " rattles " loud as you swing it. I have never seen a bear but as we make noises we never expected that either. Other animals will not bother you but a bear-mother with a small one is not adviseble to walk into. If you walk against the wind you sing and make funny stories all the time for all the bears… haha…
This might upset the other, quiet hikers, but in my opinion that is their problem, not yours. As smart hiker is a loud one?And as SAREK and the surrounding parks are the very best of our wilderness I can only say that you will enjoy the time there!
Probably some SLRK club members living in the area can advise more? Have a nice vacation.2010-12-07 kl. 10:55 #6405[Originally posted by wackt]
I’ve been there 10 years ago. Incredibly beautiful! My tip is to go in early September. Many say that the second weekend in September is best. Then, the entire mountain on fire. Frost has made all the trees red and yellow and all the mosquitoes are gone. But the question is whether you go there mostly for the adventure or to have the greatest experience of nature. It is up to you …
I think the closest you can get is about 20 miles from the park. We went into the park due east of Aktse (STF mountain cabin). There you can also take a boat that can drive you up a good bit up in rapardalen. The most common way to enter the park is well or through Kvikkjokk. Look at http://www.svenskaturistforeningen.se
Check out all my information for the 10 years since I was there.
I’m jealous, want to go back …

My girlfriend has her sister living outside iof Jokkmokk, so we will probably go there sometime this spring, perhaps we could follow part of the way? We´re driving from the south of Dalarna, Hedemora.
