      Dear All,

I checked my ECU on my Defender 90 TD5 2002, and found engine oil in the red connector See photo.
I have cleaned both sides of the connector with contact cleaner and ordered a new injector loom as i understand this is where the oil comes from.

My question is do I have to replace the engine wiring loom, they re not cheap. Are there any tricks or recommendations rather than changing loom.
There have not been any missfires or falut codes yet.

      All the Best Michael

Welcome to the Td5-Troubles-Club! Oil int ECU harness is a very common fault with Td5 engines. Usually, if no major damage has been done yet, it will be sufficient to replace the injector loom.
The main harness can be flushed with some solvent. Make sure you disconnect the plug to the ECU in order for the stuff to drain. Leave it disconnected for as long as possible, if you don’t have to use the vehicle, of course. You will have to clean the ECU-connector with a suitable solvent repeatedly until the major part of the oil has left the harness and no further soiling can be detected. This may take a while.
As long as your truck doesn’t show any other symptoms, you should not have to worry. If you feel really adventurous you even may wish to open the ECU and give it a clean out, but I don’t think this effort is required in your case. Keep your fingers crossed.
      Cheers, mate, and Good Luck!

        Dear Johannes,

You really are a Gold mine of information, thank you. I will keep cleaning, while waiting for new injector loom. No idea how long that will take now with ports closed. Luckly I have a spare ECU, as I received a remapped one today from Allisport. Actually this is why I found the oil in the connector. Have to say the remapping has made a big difference to the low end torque. Anyway, I will take the cover off the ECU just to make sure all is clean.

I can say one thing, life is not boring with the Defender. Before I had a Suzuki Vitara known as a (Hairdressers Land Rover) in the UK. All I did was put petrol in it and check the oil once every 6mths, very boring : )

I like that idea a lot, thank you. Normally the simple things are the best. I love the way Land Rover but all these designed faults in to keep us busy.

I also replaced the injector harness and drilled a small hole in the connector plug by the ECU. Has worked fine for the last 10 years. To change the whole cable setup form the engine is not worth the money or time.

                    Hello Isbjorn,

I have changed the injector loom and drilled holes in the ECU plug. Just now the process of. keep washing the engine harness through with brake cleaner and keep cleaning the plug. Now onto other fault finding, every day is a school day : )

                    Hilsen Michael

                      Dear Henrik,

Sorry for the delay, been busy with power cuts due to trees taking power lines down. Thanks for the advice. I have been using brake cleaner, where do you get the Heptan from? I also notice the gaskets swelled up, had difficulty to get the engine loom connector back into the injector loom connector. I changed out the injector loom for a new one. I have been thinking about adding a connector block into the engine loom near the ECU to act as a oil trap, as recommended by (4557) above.

Thanks guys you are all a great help, look forward to meeting you one day.

                      All the Best Michael

Heptan or ”kemisk ren bensin” you buy in any paintshop (färghandel) in a one liter bottle.
