When carrying out a K series head gasket repair it is fairly common to find that the engine cylinder liners have sunk due to extremes of heat.
Cylinder liners must have an equal stand proud of the block of at least 0.002”-0.004”.
The introduction of the improved Multi-Layer Shim (MLS) gasket for the Land Rover Freelander model in early 2005, offered greater reliability than standard silicone bead head gaskets and achieved wider acceptance with other marques using the K series engine. Although superior to previous silicone beaded head gaskets, an MLS gasket is particularly sensitive to cylinder liner heights.
Previously where cylinder liners were found to have sunk below tolerance the recommendation was to fit a silicone beaded gasket and in extreme cases where there was no stand proud at all the engine may have been rendered unserviceable.
We offer restorative 0.004” Cylinder Liner shims designed to bring sunken liners back to tolerance and enable owners to benefit from MLS head gaskets.
Shims are supplied in sets of four (to be used as required) and are recommended for professional workshop installation.
